"I will donate my economic stimulus rebate check to save the historic Meiner Flats in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine but only if 5 other people will do the same."

Pli da detaloj
The imposing 5 storey "Meiners Building" at 1500 Vine in Cincinnati's historic Over-the-Rhine is in dire need of assistance to save it from impending demolition. It's removal would leave a gaping hole at the northern end of the historic Vine corridor at a time when reinvestment is fast approaching from the south.

What better way to stimulate the economy than to use your rebate check to help pay for the stabilization costs of the Meiners Building. Historic rehabilitation projects have been shown to have a greater economic impact than new construction, so your donation will truly provide an economic stimulus.

In order to save the Meiners Building from demolition, we, the citizens of Cincinnati (and other concerned individuals), must demonstrate to the City that there is a financial committment to save the building, from a partner other than the City and 3CDC. This pledge will provide a solid base to demonstrate this committment and prove the viability of the preservation effort.

This is a non-monetary return-on-investment proposition. There is no financial benefit for anyone involved, so its important not to think of it in those terms. The benefit is derived in getting to see this important piece of Over-the-Rhine revitalized.

There is a window of opportunity to save the building. Former City Council member Jim Tarbell is heading up the effort and some funding is in the works, but private fundraising is absolutely critical if this is going to work.

You will not be asked to actually submit a donation until all of the details as to whether the building can be saved, how much is required, who will be receiving the money, etc. have been worked out. If it becomes clear that we have not raised sufficient money to save the building, the pledge will become null and void and no one will be expected to donate. If the building can be saved and the pledge has been met, however, the pledges will turn to donations and be placed in an account handled and managed by the Over-the-Rhine foundation (see www.otrfoundation.org).

Hopefully, this will allay any fears or concerns you may have about this being a scam for individual profit. This is a genuine attempt to preserve part of Cincinnati and American history and help keep Over-the-Rhine as one of the most distinctive historic district in the nation!

One last important thing -- if you are able to give $20, $100, or even $1000 or more, PLEASE do so. The $10 pledge is a minimum threshold designed to ensure that as many people can participate as possible. Your generosity in pledging a higher amount may literally be the difference between this building being saved or demolished. Simply find the "Public Comment" box and enter your email address and pledge amount there (e.g. "I would like to pledge $xx").

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Thanks so much for your support!
